Thousands of Indian farmers are committing suicide ever year

India is an agrarian country with around 60% of its people depending directly or indirectly upon agriculture. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India.

The National Crime Records Bureau of India reported in its 2012 annual report that 135,445 people committed suicide in India, of which 13,754 were farmers (11.2%).

Significant reporting on suicides among farmers in India began in the 1990s, the first state where suicides were reported was Maharashtra, similar occurrences from other states. More than 17,000 farmers a year killed themselves in 2005 and 2006. In 2012, that total dropped to 13,754 farmer suicides in India.
