Nalanda University reopens after 800 years

Nalanda University in Bihar’s Rajgir district started its first academic session on Monday, nearly 800 years after the ancient education institution was destroyed. The first academic session began on September 1, 2014. Over 1,000 applications from students around the world were received. But after scrutiny and interview only 15 were selected.

The university is intended to re-establish the older Nalanda University which was one of the oldest ancient higher-learning institutions. Originally the university was established in the 5th century AD by Gupta Kings.
