M.S Subbulakshmi

M.S Subbulakshmi was born on 16th sept, 1916 in madurai. Her full name was Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, this singer had a family that had a musical background. She began her carnatic   classical music training under her mother Shanmugavadivu and further she got training from Semmangudi Srinivasa iyer. she also learned hindustani music from Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas. Her first recording was released when sh was 10. At the age of 11, she gave her first public performance at 100 pillar hall inside  rockfort temple. By the age of 17,  she was giving concerts on her own, including major public performances at Madras Music Academy. She sang all famous meera bhajans in her melodious voice.  Even she did few films like Sevasadanam, Savitri and Meera(tamil). She travelled to london, new york, canada & many other places as India’s Cultural Ambassodar. In 1936, she met sadasivam who was a freedom fighter. they both got married after four years in 1940. In 1997 after the death of her husband, she stopped all her public performances. Many famous personalities gave her names like Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru called her Queeen of Music, Lata Mangeshkar called her Tapaswini, Kishori Amonkar called her the eighth note or Athuvaan Sur, Sarojini naidu called her Nightingale of india. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratan and further recieved many more like Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padam Vibhushan, Kalidas Samman etc. She has given 200 charity concerts. She died on 11 dec, 2004 (aged 88) chennai, tamil nadu.
