Is our Food Secure?
The Food Security Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 26th August which seeks to provide low-cost food grains to 82 crore people of India. The passage of the Food Security Bill in Parliament will access the way to give nation’s two-third population the right to 5 kg of food grain every month at highly subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 a kg.
After the bill gets Rajya Sabha’s acceptance, India will join the group of countries that guarantee majority of its population food security. The food security programme will be the biggest programme in the world. It would require 62 million tonnes of food grains for this programme. This program relies heavily on Public distribution system which itself is in rotten state. Timing of the bill may suits political objective of the ruling UPA but question in public domain is about real objective of the bill. i.e. have we secured food for 82 crore people of India?
